Grandma’s Marathon weekend has established itself as the prime community event of the year and has become synonymous with the start of summer in Duluth and the surrounding region. It is a time when our city and community warmly welcome participants from around the world, offering them an unforgettable experience of our race and the unique way of life in northern Minnesota.

Since its inception in 1994, the William A Irvin 5K has been the kickoff event to Grandma’s Marathon weekend. This 3.1-mile race takes place on Friday evening, starting and finishing near the historic William A. Irvin ore boat in Duluth’s Canal Park. 

The Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon has now claimed its status as the most sought-after event during Grandma’s Marathon weekend. Serving as the opening salvo to race day, this event has gained immense popularity over the years. The inaugural Grandma's Marathon in 1977 has evolved into a much grander affair than a mere 26.2-mile race along the picturesque North Shore of Minnesota.
